How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini (2026)
Your customers have started asking ChatGPT and Gemini who to call, and the AI answers with a shortlist of two or three names. Industry surveys in 2026 put the share of consumers using AI tools to find local businesses at nearly half, and almost none of those businesses ever get named. This guide is the fix list: seven things, in order, that decide whether the AI recommends you or the company across town.
TL;DR. AI assistants recommend the business they can verify: consistent listings everywhere, a crawlable site with real schema, recent reviews that name specific services, third-party mentions, and pages that answer the questions customers actually ask. ChatGPT reads Bing, Gemini reads Google, so you need both. No submission form exists. Test yourself today: ask the AI your own money question and see who it names.
How the AI decides who to recommend
When someone asks an assistant "who does emergency AC repair in my town" or "which dentist near me takes new patients", the AI does not consult a secret ranking. It searches, reads what comes back, and synthesizes a shortlist from sources it can verify: your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp and Apple Maps, review text, local directories, news mentions, and your own website. The businesses that get named are the ones whose public record is consistent, specific and current. The ones that never get named usually have a thin or contradictory record, or a website the crawlers cannot read.
One mechanical detail is worth more than most agency retainers: ChatGPT's browsing leans on Bing's index, while Gemini leans on Google's. Most local businesses have spent years on Google and have never once looked at Bing. That is why a business can dominate Google Maps and still not exist inside ChatGPT.
The 7 fixes, in order
1. Finish your Google Business Profile
Every field: categories, services, hours, service area, photos, and posts recent enough to prove you are alive. Gemini reads this directly. Pick the most specific primary category your business honestly fits, not the broadest.
2. Make your name, address and phone identical everywhere
Google, Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, your site footer. An AI that finds two phone numbers or three spellings of your name treats you as unverifiable and quietly drops you from the shortlist. Fix the record once, everywhere, and check it twice a year.
3. Do Bing, because ChatGPT does
Claim Bing Places, verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, and submit your sitemap there. This is the cheapest visibility arbitrage in local marketing right now: your competitors have not done it, and the largest AI assistant in the world is reading that index.
4. Fix the files that crawlers actually read
Schema markup that declares what you are, a LocalBusiness type or better, your real specific type: Dentist, Attorney, InsuranceAgency, HVACBusiness. A sitemap.xml that lists your pages. A robots.txt that does not block AI crawlers. We audit live business sites every week and routinely find the plumbing installed but empty: a valid sitemap listing zero pages, an llms.txt file with nothing in it. The file exists, says nothing, and tells every crawler the business has nothing to say.
5. Get reviews that say something
Ask every happy customer, and ask them to mention the specific service and the town. AI reads review text, not just stars. "Nic sorted our farm liability policy in a week" places you for a dozen queries that "five stars, great guy" never will. Recency beats volume: a steady trickle outsigns an old pile.
6. Publish pages that answer real questions
One page per service and area, written the way customers ask: what it costs, how long it takes, what can go wrong. Not cloned templates with the city name swapped, which AI systems recognize and discount. If your whole site is a homepage and a contact form, the AI has nothing to quote you on.
7. Get mentioned by people who are not you
Local press, the chamber of commerce, trade associations, niche directories that humans actually use. Third-party mentions are how an AI corroborates your claims. One honest story in a local paper outweighs ten directory listings nobody reads.

What it looks like for your business type
The mechanics are the same everywhere; the queries differ. A dentist wins on "taking new patients" pages and review text naming procedures (more in our AI for dentists guide). A contractor or HVAC company wins on per-service emergency pages and photos with real job locations (contractors, HVAC). A law firm wins on practice-area pages written in client language (law firms). A restaurant wins on menu pages the crawlers can read as text, not a PDF scan (restaurants). An insurance agency wins on per-line pages, auto, home, business, farm, each answering what it covers and what it costs. Same seven fixes, different vocabulary.
Test where you stand, today, free
Three checks, ten minutes. One: ask ChatGPT and Gemini your own money question, "best [what you do] in [your town]", and see who gets named. Whoever the AI answers with is your real competitor now. Two: open yoursite.com/sitemap.xml and yoursite.com/robots.txt in a browser and check they exist and actually contain something. Three: read your last five reviews and count how many name a specific service. If you got named, your files have content, and your reviews are specific, you are ahead of roughly everyone. If not, you now have the list above.
We turned this test into three copy-paste prompts that build you a personalised check script: does ChatGPT recommend your business? Run it first, then come back to the fixes.

FAQ
How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT recommendations?
Make yourself the easiest business in your category for an AI to verify. That means a complete Google Business Profile and Bing Places listing, the same name, address and phone everywhere, LocalBusiness schema on a crawlable site, a steady stream of reviews that mention specific services, and pages that answer the exact questions customers ask. There is no submission form and no shortcut. The AI recommends whoever the public record supports.
Does AI recommend local businesses based on Google reviews?
Reviews are one of the strongest signals, and not just the star count. AI assistants read review text, so twenty reviews that mention the actual service, the person who did the work, and the town you did it in beat a hundred that just say great job. Recency matters too: a business whose last review is two years old reads as possibly closed.
How much does AI search optimization cost for a small business?
You can do the basics yourself for free: listings, review asks, and a cleanup of your site files cost time, not money. Done-for-you, our Visibility Audit is $300, credited toward any fixes, and ongoing SEO plus AI visibility together runs from $500 a month with automated reporting. Be suspicious of anyone quoting enterprise retainers for a single-location business.
Do I need a new website to show up in AI answers?
Usually not. Most local sites fail on fixable details, not on design: an empty sitemap, a blank llms.txt, missing schema, no page that actually says what you do and where. We regularly find sites where the plumbing exists but every file is empty, which tells crawlers the business has nothing to say. Fix the files first; rebuild only if the site cannot render its own content.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT and Gemini answers?
Faster than classic SEO, because AI answers are not gated by years of domain authority. Listing and schema fixes can register within weeks as crawlers revisit; review volume and third-party mentions compound over two to three months. Our Rank plan carries the honest version of that promise: showing up in Google and AI answers in 90 days, or the next month is on us.
Which AI platform matters most for local customers?
Cover ChatGPT and Gemini first and the rest mostly follows. One practical detail decides a lot: ChatGPT's browsing leans on Bing's index, so a business that ignores Bing Places and Bing indexing is invisible to the biggest assistant regardless of how well it ranks on Google. Gemini leans on Google's own data, so your Business Profile carries it.
