How Much Does an AI Consultant Cost in 2026? Real Prices, Not Ranges
An AI consultant costs $100 to $300 an hour where anyone still bills hourly, $225 to $12,500 for an audit, $3,000 to $60,000 for a build sprint, $4,000 to $30,000 a month fractional, and $30,000 to $54,000 for someone embedded in your business for a quarter. Below: 21 published prices with sources, and ours.
An AI consultant costs between $225 and $54,000 depending on what you are actually buying. Hourly, where anyone still publishes it: $100 to $300. An audit: $225 to $12,500. A build sprint: $3,000 to $60,000. A fractional AI officer: $4,000 to $30,000 a month. Someone embedded in your business for a quarter: $30,000 to $54,000. Every number in that paragraph comes from a seller's own page, listed below with the link.
Every other "how much does an AI consultant cost" guide gives you a range from $7,500 to $800,000 and calls it research. That is not a price, that is a shrug. So we pulled the published prices off 15 sellers' own sites in October 2026 and put them in one table. Then we put our own prices under it, itemised.
If you want the agency version of this question, we have a separate guide on AI automation agency pricing. This one is about the consultant, the person or the small team you hire to think and build.
21 published AI consultant prices, as of October 2026
Rules for this table. Every row is a price the seller publishes on their own site, checked on 22 October 2026. No "contact us for pricing" rows. No third-party estimates. Currencies are as published; AUD and GBP rows are not converted. Where a seller lists a range, the range is theirs, not ours.

Three things we left out on purpose. HeyBRB in London has published tiers (£499 assessment, £4,950 build, £2,500 to £7,500 a month fractional) but only in a syndicated press release, not on its own site, so treat those as reported. Lilach Bullock's UK guides put small-business audits at £750 to £8,000 and fractional AI officers at £1,500 to £15,000 a month; useful bands, but they are a writer's estimate, not a seller's price. And a dozen firms we checked, Gyde, POLR AI, Alex Goryachev among them, publish no price at all. That is a data point too. We come back to it in the red flags.

What you get at each price
The table has five types, but there are really three products. Advice, a single build, and an embedded build. The price bands tell you which one you are holding.
Advice: $225 to $30,000 a month
Audits, readiness assessments, ROI blueprints and fractional officers all sell the same thing: a senior person's judgement, delivered as documents and meetings. What advice does not include is the build. You walk away with a plan and a vendor list, and the plan goes in the drawer. Goldman Sachs found that 76% of small businesses use AI but only 14% have it embedded in core operations. That gap is the drawer.
A single build: $3,000 to $60,000
The sprint sellers. One workflow, defined up front, shipped in 10 days to 12 weeks. Quoting, invoicing, lead follow-up, a report that used to take Friday. This is the most honest product on the list because you can see what you bought. The limit is the word "one". Your business does not leak in one place. It leaks in the handoffs between places, and a sprint scoped to one workflow cannot see the handoffs because nobody looked.
An embedded build: $30,000 to $54,000 a quarter
Three sellers on the list do this: AE Studio at $10,000 a week with a three-week minimum, Works HQ at AUD 40,000 to 50,000 for 90 days, Chief AI Officer at $54,000 a cycle. The product is the same shape: watch how the company actually runs, then build what it needs across teams, not one workflow in isolation. It is the thing that closes the 76-to-14 gap, and it is priced for mid-market and private equity, not for a 30-person distributor in Ohio.
The empty middle
Look at the table again. Between the single-workflow sprint at $10,000 and the embedded quarter at $30,000, there is nothing. Nobody sells "live inside a 20-to-200 person business for three weeks, then build its internal suite" at a price that owner can sign without a board. That is the gap we built The Residency into. More on the price below.
Why the hourly rate is the wrong question
Hourly feels safe because you can count hours. But count what you are buying. The UK contract market pays a median £500 a day for business process mapping. Ghanemzadeh prices forward-deployed engineering at $200 an hour. Both are fine numbers. Neither tells you what your week looks like after.
Price to the outcome instead. Two outcomes matter in an owner-run business:
- The owner's day back. If every quote, every awkward customer email and every scheduling clash routes through you, the value of a build is the day a week you stop doing that. Jobber's 2026 survey of 1,050 trades owners put jobsite management at 48%, customer communication at 40% and quoting at 37% as the biggest time sinks. The last two are buildable. A day a week of your time, priced at whatever you bill or whatever growth you are not doing, is the number to put against the quote.
- The hire avoided. Most owners asking this question are a quarter away from hiring an ops coordinator. That is $45,000 to $65,000 a year plus the six weeks of your time to train them. If a $12,000 build removes the reason for the hire, the hourly rate of the person who built it is trivia.
So the question is not "what is your rate". It is "what do I get back, by when, and what happens if I do not". The ones who answer with a rate card are selling hours. How this compares with hiring in-house is in AI consultant vs hiring an AI team.
What we charge, itemised
Same rules as the table. These are our list prices as of October 2026, in USD, and they are the only prices we quote. Full ladder on the pricing page.
| Offer | Price | Length | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Game Plan (the Shadow Week) | $500, credited 100% against any build | 1 week | A paid teardown of how your week actually runs. A map of every recurring task, the three places it leaks, and a priced plan. Guarantee: we find a day a week to claw back or it is free. |
| Install | from $2,000 | 2 to 4 weeks | The first automation wired into your actual tools. One workflow, live, on your accounts. |
| The Residency | from $8,000; full residency plus build $12,000 | 3 weeks embedded, then the build | We live inside your business remotely through your Slack, WhatsApp and ERP, with a daily screen share. A Shadow Map of every recurring task. A Day-One Win live by day 5. Then a custom internal suite under your name, on your accounts, rolled out to your team, with a handover. |
| The Residency, on site | from $14,000 | 3 weeks in your office, then the build | Same residency with a person in the room, in your country. |
| Autopilot | from $500 per 4-week cycle | Ongoing, leave with notice | The suite kept running, a senior human on call, improvements shipped as your business changes. |
The guarantee on the Residency: a documented day a week back in your calendar by day 21, or we keep working free until it is there. Two conditions, because a guarantee without conditions is marketing: two 30-minute owner sessions a week, and system access by day 2.
Against the table above, $8,000 to $12,000 for an embedded build is a quarter of AE Studio's minimum and under a third of Works HQ or Chief AI Officer. The reason is not that we do less. It is that we are senior people in India who have already built this for a clinic in Canada, a gift studio and a jeweller in India and a 5G lab in Austria, and the rent is different here. We run two residencies at a time, no more; one seat opens the first Monday of each month.

Red flags in an AI consultant's quote
- No map before the build. If the proposal names the tool before it names your workflows, they are selling the tool. A real quote comes after someone has watched your week, even for an hour.
- Price hidden until a call. Of the sellers we checked for this guide, around half publish nothing. A hidden price is a price that changes based on what they think you can pay. That is not always bad, but you should know that is what it is.
- A retainer with no exit. "3-month minimum" and "12-month engagement" show up all over the fractional tier. Fine if the value is landing. If the contract is the only thing keeping you, the value is not landing.
- "AI transformation" language. Transformation, readiness, journey, roadmap, enablement. These are words for a 2,000-person company with a steering committee. If you have 40 staff and a WhatsApp group, you need the quote to say "quoting", "invoicing", "the Monday report", and a date.
- The audit is not credited. A $10,000 diagnostic that does not come off the build is a $10,000 sales call you paid for.
- Nothing is under your name. If the automations live on their accounts, their API keys, their subscription, you are renting your own operations. Ask where it lives on day one.
8 questions to ask before you pay anyone
- Which three workflows will you touch first, and how did you pick them?
- What do I own at the end: the map, the code, the accounts, the prompts?
- Is the diagnostic credited against the build? All of it?
- What is the measurable outcome, in hours or dollars, and by which date?
- What happens if that outcome does not land? Say it in one sentence.
- Who exactly does the work, and how many hours a week do I get of that person?
- How many clients do you run at once?
- Show me the last one. Not a logo, the actual thing you built and what changed.
Our answers, for the record: the Shadow Week picks the workflows; you own everything, on your accounts; the $500 is credited in full; a documented day a week back by day 21, or we keep working free; Ishan and Vikas do the work; two residencies at a time; the last one is on the Residency page. If a consultant cannot answer all eight in a short email, the price is the least of your problems.

FAQ
How much does an AI consultant charge per hour?
Where a rate is published at all, $100 to $300 an hour. Nasser Ghanemzadeh titles his offer "forward deployed engineering at $200/hour", and the UK contract market pays a median £500 a day for business process mapping, which is about £62 an hour. Most sellers in the table above do not quote hourly at all. They price the audit, the sprint or the month, because hourly makes the buyer count hours instead of outcomes.
Is a fractional Chief AI Officer worth it for a 20-person company?
Usually not. Published fractional rates run $4,000 to $30,000 a month and you get strategy, governance and a roadmap, about 8 hours a week of a senior person. A 20-person business does not need an officer. It needs the three leaking workflows found and built. Put the same $8,000 into a build with a measurable day back for the owner, then pay a small monthly to keep it running.
Should I buy an AI audit or go straight to a sprint?
Buy the audit only if it is credited against the build and comes with a map you own. A $5,000 to $12,500 audit that ends in a slide deck is money you spend twice. A sprint without any mapping is a guess with a deadline. The right shape is a short paid teardown, credited 100%, that turns into the build if the numbers hold.
Can I get AI consulting done for $500?
You can get a real diagnosis for $500. Our AI Game Plan is one week, $500, credited in full against any build, and it comes with a guarantee: we find a day a week to claw back or it is free. What you cannot get for $500 is a working system. A single automation wired into your tools starts at about $2,000 anywhere senior people do the work.
Why are AI consultants in India cheaper than in the US?
Cost of living and currency, not quality of thinking. A senior builder in India can charge $8,000 for a residency that AE Studio prices at $30,000 because the rent is different, not the code. The honest caveat: time zones and face time. We solve that by shadowing inside your Slack, WhatsApp and ERP, with two 30-minute owner sessions a week, and we offer on-site in your country from $14,000 if you want a person in the room.
What does an AI consultant actually deliver for the money?
Three things, depending on the price band: advice (a roadmap, a readiness score, a slide deck), a single build (one workflow automated in 2 to 12 weeks), or an embedded build (someone lives in your operations for weeks, then ships an internal suite across teams). Advice is the cheapest to sell and the easiest to leave unused. Ask which of the three you are buying before you ask the price.
How do I know if an AI consultant's quote is fair?
Compare it to the table above, then ask what you own at the end. A fair quote names the workflows, names the outcome in hours or dollars, credits any diagnostic against the build, lets you leave the retainer with notice, and hands you the map and the code under your own accounts. If any of those is missing, the price is not the problem.
